In a major development, the crime staff of Rajendranagar’s Central Crime Station (CCS) arrested a habitual chain snatcher during a routine vehicle check in Alkapur Colony, located in the Narsingi Police Station area. The suspect was identified as Uppugunta Sagar, a 24-year-old resident of Lingampally, originally from Miyapur, Hyderabad.

The arrest took place around 9:00 AM when police officers noticed Sagar riding a Honda Activa scooter in a suspicious manner. Upon stopping him, Sagar gave inconsistent answers, which raised further suspicion. He was taken in for questioning, and during the interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in a recent chain-snatching incident.

    Details of the Crime

The crime in question occurred on August 17, 2024. A 26-year-old woman named Ganga Bhavani, who lives in Puppalguda, reported that while she was walking home with her two children around 4:15 PM, a man on a scooter snatched her gold nuptial thread (Pusthela Thadu), which weighed approximately 3 tolas (about 30 grams). The suspect fled the scene, and Bhavani described him as wearing a black shirt and a helmet, making it difficult to identify him.

    Recovery of Stolen Items

During Sagar’s arrest, the police recovered the following items:
    1. A gold nuptial thread (Pusthela Thadu) weighing around 30 grams.
    2. A Honda Activa 6G scooter with registration number TS-07-HK-8105.
    3. A cream-colored jacket.
    4. A Vivo mobile phone.

    Modus Operandi

Sagar, who previously worked as a private school van driver and a food delivery worker, turned to crime because of financial struggles and personal issues. On the day of the incident, he used his scooter to approach the victim, wearing a helmet and concealing the scooter’s number plate to avoid being identified.

    Previous Criminal History

This wasn’t Sagar’s first offense. He had been arrested in 2022 for a similar chain-snatching case, registered under Crime No. 839/2022 at the KPHB Police Station. After spending 25 days in judicial custody, he was released on bail but soon returned to criminal activities.

    Appreciation and Acknowledgment

The successful arrest and recovery were achieved under the guidance of K. Narsimha, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Crimes, Cyberabad. Significant contributions were made by K. Shashank Reddy, ACP Crimes, and N. Sanjay Kumar, Inspector of Police, CCS Rajendranagar, along with their teams. Their efforts in maintaining public safety were recognized and appreciated.

The Cyberabad police remain committed to preventing criminal activities and ensuring the safety of residents through swift and proactive measures.
