Residents Call for Goshamahal Bandh Over New Osmania Hospital Plans
Hyderabad: In a last-minute push to stop the government’s plan for constructing a new building for Osmania Hospital, residents near Goshamahal have announced a protest and called for a “Goshamahal bandh” on January 31.
The residents are strongly opposing the government’s decision, arguing that building a large hospital in their residential area would create significant challenges for those living nearby. Recently, they protested at Chakanawadi Nala, submitted petitions to the District Collector, and approached the local MLA. The Goshamahal Parirakshana Samithi, a group representing the locals, has vowed to continue fighting until the government reconsiders its decision, which they view as harmful to the community.
The protesters have also urged BJP MLA T Raja Singh to join their cause. They are exploring legal options and may approach the courts to challenge the government’s decision. According to the residents, their area already struggles with narrow roads and heavy traffic due to nearby markets and events. The locality houses the bustling Begum Bazar fish market, the largest kirana and plastic market, and hosts the annual Industrial Exhibition during January and February. Adding a large hospital, they argue, would worsen traffic congestion and make daily life more difficult.
Despite the opposition, the State government remains firm in its plan to proceed with the construction. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is expected to lay the foundation for the new hospital building soon. During a review meeting, the Chief Minister directed officials to ensure smoother traffic flow by developing a road network around the site. Plans also include constructing a helipad and two basement floors for parking to accommodate the increased activity in the area.
The situation in Goshamahal remains tense as residents prepare for the bandh and continue their efforts to stop the new hospital project.
