Private universities are engaging in a strange practice of sliding admissions across their multiple campuses. This practice was previously only seen in some corporate junior colleges in the Telugu states, but has now spread to private universities. The universities are able to do this because they have campuses in different states. The universities take permission from regulatory boards to admit a certain number of students each year, but if there are more applications than seats available at one campus, students are asked to take admission at another campus of the same university. There is no mechanism to check the number of students admitted by private universities each year against the number of seats permitted by the regulatory authorities. Some students have been told to take admission in another campus of the same university and then study there for the purpose of writing exams and receiving their degree. Despite the violation of rules and regulations, there is hardly any action taken by regulatory bodies or state higher education department authorities. This has allowed private universities to bypass admission norms.
