Cold weather has intensified across the country this winter, with minimum temperatures being recorded in all regions. As part of the winter magic, India will observe the longest night and shortest day on Friday.

Every year, on either December 21 or December 22, there is a transition in seasons called ‘Winter Solstice’. During this time, the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the Sun, causing the Earth to tilt 23.4 degrees on its axis. This results in the Earth’s poles being farther away from the Sun during the day, leading to the shortest day and longest night.

This year, the winter solstice occurred on Friday, December 22 at 8.57 am IST. As a result, the Northern Hemisphere experiences the shortest daylight hours, with only about 7 hours and 14 minutes of daylight.
