Ponnam Prabhakar, currently serving as the State BC Welfare and Transport Minister, has had a remarkable political journey. Starting as an NSUI leader with no political background, he quickly rose through the ranks due to his dedication and connection with the people. Known affectionately as ‘Ponnam Anna’ by his followers, he is praised for his punctuality and constant interaction with the public.
In 1987, Prabhakar began his political career by winning the election to Karimnagar SRR Degree College as a student leader. He later served as the district president of NSUI Karimnagar and eventually became the State president. Additionally, he held positions such as chairman of MarkFed and working president of the Congress Party. In 2009, he was elected as the MP for Karimnagar parliamentary seat and accomplished various developments in the region.
As a close associate of Rahul Gandhi, Prabhakar advocated for a separate Telangana in the Parliament and played a significant role in the movement. Although he lost in the last Assembly election from Karimnagar, he strategically contested and won from Husnabad this time. His victory over V Sathish Babu of the BRS by a margin of 19,344 votes showcases his strong support in the region.
Prabhakar’s journey as a student activist and leader in the Telangana movement has shaped his political career. As the youngest MP elected from Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency during 2009-2014, he has fought for various student-related issues and continues to be a prominent figure in Telangana politics.
