Telangana Police to Train Athletes for National Competitions
The Telangana Director General of Police (DGP), Dr. Jitender, has announced a plan to provide three months of specialised training to selected participants from the Telangana Police Sports Meet 2025. The goal is to help these athletes win more medals at the national level. The DGP believes that identifying talented individuals and offering focused training will enable them to excel further.
This year marked the return of state-level competitions in the police department after a gap of nearly seven years. The third State-Level Police Games and Sports Meet was held over five days in Karimnagar. This is only the third such event since the formation of Telangana, with the previous meets being held in Adilabad in 2015 and Warangal in 2017.
Special attention was given by DGP Dr. Jitender to ensure the success of these events. Athletes from all police units across the state participated, bringing new energy and enthusiasm to the department.
To further nurture talent, plans are underway to establish coaching centres under the guidance of Cricketer Mohammed Siraj and Women’s Boxer Nikhat Zareen, both of whom are also Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) in the Special Police Battalion. These centres aim to develop athletes capable of competing and succeeding at both national and international levels.
The Telangana Police Department has also introduced a new logo symbolising dynamism, integrity, and solidarity. The department has decided to provide training in 28 different sports disciplines, including cycling, athletics, yoga, swimming, wrestling, basketball, boxing, football, and more.
Selected athletes will receive specialised training in these sports to prepare for national-level competitions. To motivate participants, the department has introduced an incentive program for national-level winners. Winners of the first prize will receive Rs. 3 lakh and three increments, the second prize Rs. 2 lakh and two increments, and the third prize Rs. 1 lakh and one increment.
The recently concluded state-level competitions saw participation from 2,380 athletes representing 20 teams, including 296 women and 12 IPS officers. Across 28 sports, a total of 236 gold, 236 silver, and 396 bronze medals were awarded.
Athletes who demonstrated outstanding talent will soon receive direct training to compete at the national level. Officials are also considering making these state-level competitions an annual event to maintain the enthusiasm and competitive spirit within the department.
This initiative is seen as a major step in promoting sports within the police force and aims to enhance Telangana’s representation at national and international sporting events.
