Hyderabad has introduced 30 ‘Pelican Signals’ to help pedestrians cross roads safely. The signals are located at points where there are no intersections and are designed to improve safety for both pedestrians and drivers. The Pelican signals will benefit those with disabilities, increase visibility of crosswalks and regulate traffic flow. The police and GHMC teams worked together to identify the locations for the signals. Volunteers will operate the signals manually and give pedestrians 15-20 seconds to cross the road safely. The remaining signals will be installed in Tri-Commissionerate.

The Commissioner also issued 100 body-worn cameras to traffic frontline officers to improve transparency and accountability in traffic management. He distributed kits containing rain coats, rain boots, glucose packets, water bottles and sunglasses to traffic constables and home guards. Rugged tabs were also distributed to patrol officers to attend Dial 100 emergency calls and access department’s data in real-time.
