    Osmania University Pays Tribute to Filmmaker Shyam Benegal

    Hyderabad: Osmania University held a special meeting on Wednesday to honor the life and legacy of Shyam Benegal, a renowned filmmaker and alumnus of Nizam College. Benegal passed away on December 23, 2024, at the age of 90.

    During the tribute, the university expressed its condolences to Benegal’s family, friends, and admirers. Born in Trimulgherry, Secunderabad, Shyam Benegal attended Mahbub College for his early education before pursuing an MA in Economics at Nizam College, part of Osmania University. While at Nizam College, he founded the Hyderabad Film Society, which became a platform for intellectual exchange and inspired a love for cinema among aspiring filmmakers.

    Professor K Stevenson, a retired professor of journalism, highlighted Benegal’s significant contribution to Indian cinema. He described Benegal as a pioneer of parallel cinema in India, known for encouraging creativity rooted in local stories. Films like Ankur (shot in Bolarum), Nishant, and Manthan showcased Benegal’s ability to address social and political realities with sensitivity and authenticity. His work shed light on societal issues, challenged norms, and gave voice to marginalized communities, demonstrating the power of art in driving social change.

    Osmania University Vice Chancellor, Professor Kumar Molugaram, emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from luminaries like Benegal. He encouraged students to embrace intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, and storytelling to create a positive impact on society.

    The program was also attended by University Registrar Professor G Naresh Reddy, OSD to the Vice Chancellor Professor S Jithendra Kumar Naik, and many others from the university community. Together, they celebrated Benegal’s legacy and his enduring contributions to the world of cinema and society.
