Osmania General Hospital Achieves Milestone with Liver Transplants
Hyderabad: Osmania General Hospital (OGH) has set a remarkable record by successfully performing five liver transplants in just 30 days. This achievement is being hailed as a significant milestone, especially for a government hospital.
The transplants were conducted for patients suffering from rare genetic liver diseases. All five patients belonged to low-income families and were relatively young. The surgeries included three cadaver liver transplants and two live donor liver transplants.
Among the patients, one child was diagnosed with Tyrosinemia Type 1, three others were battling Wilson’s disease, and one adult had chronic Budd-Chiari syndrome. These conditions require highly specialized care and are often financially out of reach for economically disadvantaged patients.
According to the doctors, similar surgeries in private hospitals typically cost around ₹30–40 lakh, a sum that these patients could not afford. At OGH, the transplants were carried out free of cost, and the hospital is also providing lifelong free immunosuppression drugs through the Aarogyasri scheme to ensure the patients’ recovery and long-term health.
Dr. CH Madhusudhan, Head of the Surgical Gastroenterology Department, led the complex procedures. He expressed pride in the achievement, noting that performing five liver transplants in a single month at a government hospital was unprecedented in India. “No other government hospital has accomplished this many liver transplants in such a short span,” he said.
This achievement highlights the growing capabilities of government healthcare institutions in providing advanced medical care to underserved populations.
