Hyderabad: While many parts of Hyderabad are transitioning to eco-friendly electric buses, the northern region of the city has yet to benefit from this move. Residents of Medchal and Shamirpet, along with members of the North Hyderabad Development Forum and the Medchal Metro Sadhana Samithi, have called on the State government to introduce 100 electric buses and Pushpak Airport Liner AC buses in their area.

Local residents have submitted a petition to Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and TSRTC officials, urging them to bring these modern buses to their region. They highlighted the lack of proper public transport in Medchal and Shamirpet, pointing out that these areas are underserved compared to other parts of Hyderabad. The petition emphasized that allocating 100 electric buses could significantly improve the situation and align the northern parts of the city with Hyderabad’s eco-friendly transport goals.

Residents also stressed the importance of eco-friendly public transport in tackling pollution in the area. Medchal and Shamirpet, which host several industries, suffer from poor air quality due to vehicular emissions. Introducing electric buses would help address these challenges by reducing pollution and improving connectivity. They argued that such a move would ensure balanced development across Hyderabad.

Sampath Reddy, a member of the Medchal Metro Sadhana Samithi, stated, “It is time to replace polluting diesel buses with sleek, green electric buses in Secunderabad Cantonment, Qutbullapur, Medchal, and Malkajigiri.” He also highlighted how the Jeedimetla Industrial area faces daily traffic congestion, making electric buses a practical and eco-friendly solution.

Electric buses, powered by motors and batteries instead of diesel engines, are charged using external charging stations. Reddy explained that while these buses require a higher initial investment, they are more energy-efficient and cost-effective in the long run due to lower operating and maintenance expenses. Beyond their environmental benefits, these buses could also bring financial savings over time.

Residents hope the State government will act swiftly to introduce electric buses in their area, ensuring cleaner air and better public transport options for the northern parts of the city.
