New Delhi: India has not recorded any cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which has been linked to a rise in respiratory infections in China, confirmed Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Atul Goel on January 3. He assured that there is no cause for concern regarding the current situation.
Monitoring the Situation
Dr. Goel’s statement comes after unverified reports surfaced about a respiratory infection outbreak in China. He emphasized that Indian health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will validate any new information or developments as necessary.
What is HMPV?
HMPV is a respiratory virus similar to the common cold, which can cause flu-like symptoms, particularly in young children and the elderly. Dr. Goel advised people to take basic precautions to prevent infections, such as avoiding close contact if experiencing symptoms of cough and cold. He also recommended following respiratory etiquette and using regular cold and fever medications as needed.
“There is no significant rise in respiratory infections in India as per December 2024 data, and no large-scale outbreaks have been reported from any institutions,” he stated, reassuring that hospitals are prepared for seasonal increases in respiratory illnesses during winter.
China Responds to Reports of Flu Outbreak
Meanwhile, China has downplayed concerns over an alleged flu outbreak, stating that respiratory infections this year are less severe than in previous years. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning dismissed reports of overwhelmed hospitals, emphasizing that the country remains safe for travel.
Though social media videos have shown overcrowded hospitals, Mao Ning stated that the spread of HMPV has been limited and less severe than last year.
Indian health officials continue to monitor the global situation but maintain that there is no need for alarm in the country.
