Hyderabad: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved eight new medical colleges in Telangana. This will result in an additional 400 MBBS seats for students in the state.
Health Minister C Damodar Raja Narsimha announced the news on Tuesday. He said it was a positive development for the people of Telangana. Initially, the NMC had raised concerns, rejecting permissions for the colleges due to a lack of required facilities based on the new norms. In April, the NMC issued a show cause notice, and a physical inspection took place in June. After the first appeal, four colleges were approved.
In the second appeal, an additional four colleges were also approved. The Health Department took several steps, including conducting general transfers, promotions, and improving infrastructure and medical equipment. With these efforts, all eight new colleges received approval.
Each of the eight new colleges will have an intake of 50 students, adding up to 400 new MBBS seats. Previously, Telangana had 3,690 medical seats, but with this new approval, the number has risen to 4,090. The Health Minister expressed gratitude to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for following the guidelines set by the NMC, which led to the approval of these new colleges.
