Seed Cotton Farmers in Gadwal Urge Authorities to Address Exploitation
Farmers in the Jogulamba Gadwal district are facing increasing exploitation from intermediaries, known as organizers, in the seed cotton industry. To address these issues, the Nadigadda Rights Struggle Committee (NHPS) has submitted a memorandum to District Collector BM Santosh, demanding justice and systemic reforms to protect farmers’ rights.

Rising Exploitation of Farmers
The district is home to over 40,000 seed cotton farmers, who are being negatively impacted by the current seed distribution system. Instead of providing foundation seeds directly to farmers, companies rely on organizers as middlemen. This system has led to widespread exploitation, with farmers suffering financially and logistically.

Major Complaints from Farmers
Farmers have raised several key issues regarding the unfair practices of organizers:
1. Financial Exploitation: Farmers are subjected to high interest rates, manipulation of weights, and lower prices for their produce.
2. Payment Delays: Though companies release payments within three months (by December), organizers often delay payments to farmers for up to six months.
3. False Claims: Organizers falsely declare seed quality tests (GOT results) as failed, further cheating farmers.
4. Illegal Charges: Organizers collect additional charges from farmers, such as ginning fees (despite the companies covering these costs) and insurance premiums without any transparency.

NHPS Demands for Reform
The NHPS has proposed several measures to protect farmers and ensure fair practices in the seed cotton industry:
– Seed Testing Transparency: Companies should revert to earlier practices of testing seeds and storing seed cotton samples in warehouses until results are declared.
– Tripartite Agreement: A formal agreement should be established between companies, organizers, and farmers to safeguard farmers’ interests.
– Timely Payments: Farmers should receive their payments by April, and seed cotton weighing should be conducted in their presence with rates displayed publicly.
– Fair Pricing: The price of seed packets must be revised to provide fair compensation for farmers.
NHPS District Chairman Gongalla Ranjith Kumar emphasized the urgency of these reforms and called for a meeting between company representatives, organizers, and farmers to address the issues comprehensively.

A United Call for Justice
The movement has garnered support from several NHPS leaders, including District Convener Bucchibabu and activists such as Venkatramulu, Bhupati, Lakshmanna, and others. Their participation highlights the widespread concern over the exploitation of farmers in the region.

A Broader Perspective on the Issue
The plight of seed cotton farmers in Gadwal sheds light on a systemic issue in agriculture, where middlemen often exploit vulnerable farmers. The NHPS demands, such as payment deadlines, transparent processes, and tripartite agreements, could bring much-needed relief and, if implemented effectively, serve as a model for addressing similar problems in other agricultural sectors.
Addressing these challenges will require strong political will, consistent enforcement of laws, and collaboration among all stakeholders. The time for action is now to ensure that farmers, the backbone of the agricultural economy, are treated fairly and justly.
