The Nayi Brahmin community recently celebrated World Barber's Day in Gadwal. This day was set aside to recognize the cultural and historical contributions of barbers to society. According to history, the practice of shaving began around 1500 BC as a medical procedure used by physicians to save lives. Over time, this practice became part of Ayurveda, with famous figures like Sushruta and Charaka playing key roles in its development.
Charaka, in particular, is known for spreading Ayurveda and providing medical services to villages, making it accessible to many people. In ancient times, barbers were not just groomers; they were considered medical practitioners called “Charakas.” The word “Charaka” means “wanderer” in Sanskrit, referring to their practice of traveling from village to village to offer healthcare services. Over time, some of these “Charakas” became “Kshurakas” (barbers), combining their medical skills with grooming.
The Nayi Brahmin community has long been known for their expertise in three areas: Ayurvedic medicine, music, and barbering. In the past, they held important roles as Dhanvantari Brahmins, Vaidya Brahmins, Charakas, and even royal physicians. Some members of the community were advisors to kings, earning them the title of “Pandita Rajas” (scholar-kings), due to their deep understanding of human behavior.
In Aiza town, the World Barber’s Day celebrations were led by members of the Nayi Brahmin Seva Sangham. Key figures like Taluka President M. Govindu, Mandal President M. Mahesh, Town President M. Shekhar, and District Publicity Secretary M. Somasekhar attended the event. Other notable attendees included State Advisor Sudhakar Nayak and various community leaders like Surya, Ashok, Tirumalesh, Balraj, and Mohan.
Additionally, leaders from various political parties and organizations, such as Nagar Doddi Venkata Ramulu, Kurava Pullayya, Rangoo Maddileti, Vijay Bhaskar Reddy, and BJP leaders Madanna and Mittadoddi Narasimhulu, also participated in the celebrations.
Lastly, M. Somasekhar, the District Publicity Secretary, extended warm congratulations to all members of the Nayi Brahmin community across the Jogulamba Gadwal district, Alampur Taluk, and nearby areas in honor of World Barber’s Day.
