Hyderabad Sees High Demand for Prayer Rugs Ahead of Ramzan
As the holy month of Ramzan approaches, the demand for prayer rugs, known as ‘Musalla,’ is rising in Hyderabad. During this time, families and mosques prepare for the sacred month by decorating their spaces with fresh carpets and prayer mats. One of the most popular types is the prayer mat from the Riyadh-ul-Jannah area of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madina, which remains highly desirable among worshippers.
In the weeks leading up to Ramzan, Hyderabad’s markets become lively with activity. Shops and bazaars are filled with Musallas in various colors, patterns, and textures. Many people buy these rugs for personal use, while others donate them to mosques in memory of their loved ones. Prayer rugs play an essential role in Islamic worship, and Hyderabad provides access to some of the finest varieties from around the world. Thick, velvety, and beautifully woven mats, similar to those found in the holy mosques of Mecca and Madina, are especially popular. The city imports high-quality Musallas from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, and Belgium to meet different preferences and budgets.
Mohammad Ilyas Bukhari, Managing Director of Hyderabad’s 120-year-old Mohammed Cap Mart, confirms the increasing demand. “About 20 days before Ramzan, we see a sharp rise in prayer rug sales,” he says. He adds that the Riyadh-ul-Jannah prayer mats, which come in three different colors, are among the most sought-after. His store takes pride in offering a special collection of rugs and carpets for the holy month.
For many in Hyderabad, prayer mats hold deep sentimental value. Some families place them in mosques as a tribute to deceased relatives, while newlyweds often receive a prayer mat and a Quran as their first wedding gifts. This tradition symbolizes faith and devotion.
Musallas come in different materials, including silk, wool, nylon, and polyester. Some are hand-woven with intricate traditional designs, while others are machine-made with modern patterns. The finest handmade rugs are crafted by skilled artisans, but these are not easily found in local markets and must be sourced from specialized manufacturers.
Besides their spiritual importance, prayer rugs also provide comfort. They help insulate against cold or hard floors, making prayer more comfortable.
The price of Musallas varies depending on their origin and craftsmanship. Locally made and machine-produced Belgian prayer mats are affordable, with a roll for 10 worshippers costing around Rs 5,000. A larger roll for 50 worshippers starts at Rs 15,000. Turkish prayer mats can cost up to Rs 5,000, while hand-woven Kashmiri Musallas, known for their fine craftsmanship, start at Rs 20,000 and can go up to Rs 5 lakh. Iranian and Saudi Arabian prayer rugs remain some of the most sought-after imported options.
As Ramzan nears, businesses offer discounts on both local and imported prayer rugs, making them more accessible to mosques and individuals. The growing demand highlights the spiritual significance of the holy month, as Muslims prepare their prayer spaces with devotion and reverence.
With a mix of tradition, craftsmanship, and faith, the practice of buying a new Musalla continues to be an important part of Ramzan. This tradition connects generations and strengthens the spiritual essence of the month.
