Gunmen attacked a water park in central Mexico, killing six adults and one child on the last day of spring school vacation. The attack took place at La Palma swimming resort in the municipality of Cortazar, where the gunmen arrived at 4:30 pm local time. They opened fire on a group of people before yanking out security cameras from the site and retreating. The victims collapsed on the floor or chairs amid thick smoke, while others ran for cover from the gunfire.
The attack occurred in Guanajuato, a state in central Mexico that has seen a surge in drug-related violence in recent years. The Santa Rosa de Lima crime group and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel are disputing over fuel theft and drug trafficking in the region. The resort, abutting a university campus, was swarmed by military and state police after the attack.
Mexico has registered more than 350,000 murders since the government controversially deployed the army to fight drug cartels in 2006, most of them blamed on criminal gangs.
