During the New Year celebrations, over 3,000 cases of drunk driving were registered in Hyderabad. The police conducted a special drive in Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda police Commissionerates to curb drunk driving and prevent road accidents. Among those caught, there were four women, 19 senior citizens, and 13 minors.
During late-night checking, the traffic police seized a large number of vehicles. The police noticed an increase in drunk driving instances during the celebrations. To reduce drunk driving, the police used breath analyzers from 8 pm onwards. They also imposed traffic restrictions and used speed radars and vehicle-mounted cameras to closely monitor violators by conducting breath analyzer tests.
The highest number of offenses were reported in Hyderabad (1,243), followed by Cyberabad (1,241) and Rachakonda (517). The Miyapur police booked the most cases (253), followed by Kukatpally (123), Uppal (107), and Vanasthalipuram (105). The IT corridor had a higher number of drunk driving cases.
A total of 2,435 two-wheelers, 73 three-wheelers, and 486 four-wheelers were booked. In Rachakonda, 342 individuals had blood alcohol content (BAC) up to 100 mg/100 ml of blood, 173 had up to 300 mg, and two individuals had 500 mg. In Cyberabad, 681 individuals had an alcohol reading of more than 100 mg/100 ml, 509 had up to 300 mg, and 51 had up to 500 mg.
The police expressed disappointment in seeing highly educated individuals and employees of reputed organizations violating traffic rules. These individuals will be required to attend counseling with their family members at the traffic training institutes in the Commissionerate’s. They will also have to attend court for the final resolution of their cases. Violators may face a penalty of up to Rs 10,000, imprisonment, and community service as punishment.
The police will continue the drive against drunk driving throughout the year to deter repeat offenses. They have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to preventing road accidents.
