A satellite image taken on Wednesday showed Cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea. This is the first storm in the region this year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the cyclone has intensified and is now a severe cyclonic storm. Meteorologists predict that the monsoon onset over Kerala will be “mild” and that the progress beyond the southern peninsula will be “weak” due to the cyclone’s influence.

The IMD said that the monsoon onset is likely to happen in Kerala within two days, but it will be affected by the cyclone’s intensity. The storm is expected to move northwards and become a very severe cyclonic storm. However, there hasn’t been any prediction of a major impact on countries adjoining the Arabian Sea, including India, Oman, Iran, and Pakistan.

Meteorologists predict that the storm’s tentative track will be in a northward direction, but sometimes storms don’t follow the predicted path. The cyclone has been undergoing “rapid intensification,” going from a cyclonic circulation to a severe cyclonic storm in just 48 hours, which defies earlier predictions. The system is expected to sustain the strength of a very severe cyclone until June 12.

Scientists say that cyclonic storms in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea have been intensifying rapidly and retaining their intensity for a longer duration due to climate change.
