A small eatery in central Delhi called The Treat is dedicated to Rajesh Khanna, a famous actor in Hindi cinema known for his stylized acting and mannerisms in films such as “Anand”, “Kati Patang” and “Amar Prem”. The restaurant has preserved his memory through photographs, songs, and films that play on a loop. The owner, Vipin Oberoi, 69, was inspired by Khanna’s acting and made it his ambition to become his friend. Oberoi met Khanna during the shooting of “Ashanti” in Mumbai, and they became close friends. When Khanna suggested that Oberoi join politics, he declined and instead opened The Treat in 1993. The restaurant has many pictures of Khanna and stills from his movies. Oberoi believes that Khanna was the “king of kings” and never needed any kind of publicity or advertisements. The restaurant has a steady stream of customers who visit in the evening to enjoy the various delicacies it has to offer them, including many younger customers who may never have seen a Rajesh Khanna film.
