The incomplete Skyway project at Mehdipatnam is causing issues for pedestrians and commuters in Hyderabad. The 390-meter-long Skyway is being built by the HMDA with Rs 32.97 crore to ease pedestrian movement at the busy junction.
In January, the Defence Ministry handed over land near Rythu Bazaar for the construction of an elevated lift and staircase. Despite the presence of a Zebra crossing and signals, pedestrians are finding it difficult to cross the road at Mehdipatnam. The traffic is managed by the police.
Many pedestrians are struggling with heavy traffic and a lack of foot-over-bridges at bus stops in the area. The situation worsens during rush hours. The Skywalk project has been ongoing for three years, posing risks of accidents for those crossing the road.
A senior HMDA officer mentioned that the Skywalk will be completed by the end of the month. Once ready, it will provide a safe way for over 50,000 pedestrians to move without having to navigate through vehicular traffic. The Skywalk has 13 elevators, two tunnel walks, and stretches over 390 meters.
The Skywalk will have five entry and exit points at various locations in Mehdipatnam. It also includes commercial space for setting up shops and lounges.
