With the increasing number of gastrointestinal cancers in India, it is important to use artificial intelligence (AI) for early detection and accurate diagnosis. This can help avoid surgeries and improve the lifespan of patients. Currently, most GI cancers are detected at an advanced stage, requiring surgery and chemotherapy. Dr. Prateek Sharma, an international medical expert, emphasized the benefits of using AI during a summit on “Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare” at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG).

According to Dr. Sharma, if these cancers are diagnosed early using AI, they can be removed endoscopically. This not only avoids surgery but also reduces cost and improves the patient’s quality of life. He also highlighted the importance of a healthy lifestyle and diet in preventing GI cancers. Factors such as consuming less vegetables, fresh fruits, and cereals, as well as eating more fast food and processed food, can contribute to the increased incidence of these cancers.

Dr. Sharma also discussed the advantages of using AI in healthcare. It can help physicians in rural areas provide better healthcare through digital technology and telemedicine. For example, a physician in a rural area can seek guidance from an expert through telemedicine during a procedure. However, there are concerns about data security and patient privacy when using AI in healthcare. Dr. Sharma emphasized the need to protect data and develop AI algorithms specific to the Indian context.

In response to the rise in GI cancers in India, Dr. Sharma suggested screening people aged 50 and above for early detection. During the summit, Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman and Chief of Gastroenterology at AIG Hospitals, mentioned that artificial intelligence will revolutionize the practice of medicine in the coming years. AIG Hospitals has also introduced the concept of “Green Endoscopy” to reduce carbon footprint.
