Kalumu Payi, a 28-year-old member of the banned CPI (Maoist) party, has surrendered to the police. Her decision is seen as a major step in the ongoing efforts to reduce Maoist insurgency in the region. Payi, who is from Palwa Village in the Sookma District, made this choice amidst increasing police operations, including the creation of new camps and conflicts with Maoist forces.
Payi joined the Maoist group in 2009 and quickly rose through the ranks. She initially served as a platoon member under Ramesh, the Local Operational Squad (LOS) Commander. Over the years, she held various roles, including Deputy Commander and later Commander of the LOS. In 2020, she was promoted to the Area Committee and became Commander of the Malaysia unit.
In June 2021, Payi married Madhavi Bhima, another Maoist leader from the Kerlapal Area Committee. The wedding was held in the Gonge forest area under the supervision of divisional committee member Jaggu. During her time with the Maoists, Payi was involved in several violent incidents as directed by senior leaders. She was also carrying a bounty of Rs. 4 lakhs for her capture.
Several factors influenced Payi’s decision to surrender. Recent clashes between Maoist insurgents and police, along with her deteriorating health, played a role. Additionally, she grew disillusioned with the organization, feeling that top leaders treated members unfairly and prioritized their own interests.
The district police noted a growing trend of Maoist members surrendering. Many have been motivated by the rehabilitation programs and amenities offered by the Telangana government. Authorities are encouraging other Maoist members to follow Payi’s example and reintegrate into society.
Police have assured those who surrender that they will receive support for rehabilitation and a chance to build a better life outside of insurgency. The administration is committed to helping them transition to a peaceful and productive future.
