Mohan Babu, a labourer from Singareni Colony, was upset after being scolded by his wife when he returned home intoxicated. He then climbed the closest high-tension electricity tower on Sankeshwar Bazaar Road.

Communters noticed Mohan on the tower and informed the local power department officials, who shut off the power supply. The police arrived and tried to convince Mohan to come down, but when their attempts failed, they planned to climb the tower themselves.
