The largest reservoir in Telangana, Komuravelli Mallanna Sagar, is not safe, according to a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). The reservoir, which is part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, was constructed in a location with a deep-seated vertical fault, as revealed by seismic studies conducted by the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI).
Despite the potential for damage to the reservoir in a seismic zone, the previous government proceeded with the construction, spending Rs 6,126.809 crore. The report also highlighted that seven reservoirs under the Kaleshwaram project have caused submergence and displacement of families. However, only three reservoirs have completed the Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) activities, while the remaining four have yet to identify the displaced families and initiate R&R.
Regarding the Pranahita project, there has been no progress in the last four years. The decision to re-engineer the project and obtain necessary clearances, including from the Central Water Commission (CWC) and Maharashtra, was made six years ago. However, no command area has been developed, and it may take many more years before any irrigation benefits can be derived from the project. The expenditure of Rs 878 crore on the project remains unproductive.
