The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has an important meeting today to discuss the redevelopment of the historic Gandhi Nagar market. This market is known as Asia’s largest hub for ready-made garments and textiles.

The Delhi government wants the MCD to oversee the project because it falls under their jurisdiction. The industries department will provide funding for the project.

The main goal of the project is to improve the market by upgrading roads, sewer lines, parking facilities, and public utilities. The School of Planning and Architecture, industries department, engineering department, Delhi Jal Board, and BSES have conducted assessments to determine the necessary work.

The first phase of the development plan includes 14 points for improving the market infrastructure. The second phase will focus on beautification and facade improvement.

Gandhi Nagar is a historic market with over 25,000 shops and 10,000 household manufacturing units. It generates a daily turnover of over ₹100 crore. However, inadequate infrastructure has caused a decline in its share of the garment trade.

The proposed plan includes resurfacing roads and constructing two multi-level car parks. The drainage system will be upgraded with reinforced cement concrete-type drains.

To replicate the Chandni Chowk renovation, five transformers and overhead cables will be relocated. Fire safety measures will also be implemented.

Minor additions to the plan include informative signboards, new street furniture, and improved sanitation facilities. Stakeholder input will be considered before finalizing the scheme.

The head of the Gandhi Nagar Traders’ Association emphasized the urgent need for road repairs, drainage channel installation, and improved sanitation conditions.
