Minister Malla Reddy from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) won the 2018 Assembly elections in Medchal constituency. Former BRS legislator Sudheer Reddy was not given the ticket by the party. However, there is now strong competition between the major political parties to win the Assembly seat this year. Sudheer Reddy is seeking a nomination from the BRS party again, which has intensified the power struggle between him and Malla Reddy.
This situation has caused discontent within the BRS party as Sudheer Reddy claims that Malla Reddy has not made any significant contributions to the progress and development of the Medchal constituency. Singireddy Harivardhan Reddy and Thotakuru Jangaiah Yadav from the Congress are actively campaigning for the seat and conducting various programs to gain support. The BJP also has high hopes for this constituency due to its semi-urban nature, which they believe will benefit them.
Kompalli Mohan Reddy and Patholla Vikram Reddy from the BJP are both competing for the ticket, with Vikram also holding the position of district president within the party. Medchal Assembly constituency, traditionally a stronghold of the Congress, experienced a political shift in 1985 when a TDP nominee won over the Congress candidate. Although the Congress regained the seat in 1989, it remained a stronghold for the TDP in the following three terms.
There are a total of 464,684 voters in this seat. In the 2018 Telangana elections, Medchal had a voter turnout of 60.43%, and in the 2014 elections, it was 60.87%. In 2009, industrialist Laxma Reddy defeated the TDP candidate and won the seat. The constituency includes the mandals of Shamirpet, Medchal, Keesara, and Ghatkesar, which are primarily rural areas. However, due to the real estate industry’s growth, many agricultural lands in the region have been converted into real estate ventures and residential colonies.
