The Mahalakshmi free bus ride for women in Telangana, a scheme by the Congress government, has been a huge relief for women and third genders in the State. Since its launch on December 9, 2023, the scheme has saved them over Rs 1,177 crore in just four months. Initially, around 14 lakh women were using the complimentary travel facility daily, but now the number has increased to an average of 29.67 lakh women per day.

According to TSRTC, as of April 7, the corporation has issued zero tickets worth Rs 1,177 crore, representing the estimated savings for women. The number of women passengers has been steadily increasing since the scheme’s launch: 26.99 lakh in December, 28.10 lakh in January, 30.56 lakh in February, and 31.42 lakh in March.

In Hyderabad alone, approximately six lakh women use the complimentary bus travel scheme every day. Previously, women had to spend up to Rs 1,500 on bus passes and fares. This initiative has not only transformed commuting for women but also significantly contributed to their economic empowerment.

The Mahalakshmi scheme allows free travel on TSRTC buses for girls, women, and transgender individuals of all ages residing in Telangana. They can travel for free anywhere within the State borders on city ordinary, metro express, palle velugu, and express bus services.
