Liquor Sales Hit Record High in Khammam District

Liquor sales have been booming in the Khammam district, with traders completing the first year of their two-year license period. From December 2023 to November 2024, alcohol sales reached record levels, reflecting a growing demand in the region.

Currently, the joint Khammam district has 210 liquor shops, 48 bars, and three clubs, all supplied from the Viera depot. Liquor is distributed to these traders at an invoice price, who then add their profit margins and sell it at the Maximum Retail Price (MRP).

Official sources revealed that from December 2023 to November 2024, traders purchased liquor worth ₹2,378 crore from the depot at invoice prices. When sold at MRP, the value exceeds ₹2,800 crore. During this period, a total of 30.57 thousand cases of liquor and 19.41 thousand cases of beer were sold.

A significant portion of liquor sales takes place in belt shops, which are small, informal outlets. These shops have become a major driver of alcohol sales in the district. Officials estimate there are around 7,000 belt shops in the joint Khammam district, with 150 to 200 in each mandal. The government, aiming to increase monthly alcohol sales, has been encouraging these belt shops.

Although alcohol sales remain strong, some factors have caused slight fluctuations. After the formation of the new government in Andhra Pradesh (AP), sales there reportedly decreased due to the unavailability of certain brands. Additionally, seasonal spiritual programs held between October and January tend to temporarily reduce sales. However, on an annual basis, sales continue to grow.

Excise Assistant Commissioner G. Ganesh highlighted the increase in sales this year. “The sales increased by ₹400 crore compared to last year,” he told The Hans India. Ganesh also expressed optimism for higher sales in December and reminded the public of the toll-free number, 180042525223, displayed at shops to report any malpractice.
