The Koti Women’s College in Hyderabad, which recently became Telangana MahilaViswavidyalayam, will be celebrating its centenary year next month. To mark the occasion, several year-long events have been planned.

The college was established in 1924 on September 3 in Koti. It was later moved to Golden Threshold in 1939 and then to its current location, the Koti Residency, in 1950. The college started with 63 acres of land, but some of it was given to the Osmania Medical College.

The college has a rich history of producing successful individuals in various fields. Notably, Rabindranath Tagore played a role in selecting the first woman faculty at the college. Aruna Gibbs, from Mysuru, was appointed to improve women’s education in the 1930s.

Currently, the college has around 5,000 students pursuing different undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The centenary celebrations will begin in September, with the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar as the chief guest. Various events such as the convocation ceremony, annual day, global alumni meet, and exhibitions are planned.

In addition to regular courses, the college has introduced skill-oriented courses in sectors like healthcare management, fashion design, gaming art, nutrition, data science, and food science. There are also plans to introduce engineering and physical education courses next year.

The college is located on the premises of the historic British Residency. The main building of the college is a monument of great aesthetic and historical importance. It is currently listed for restoration and modernization by the World Monument Fund.
