Shocking Ragging Incident at Khammam Medical College
A disturbing case of ragging has surfaced at Khammam Government Medical College, where a first-year MBBS student was allegedly forced to shave his head by an assistant professor. This incident, which reportedly occurred earlier in November, has triggered widespread outrage and calls for action.
The student, who hails from Mulugu district, joined the college on November 12. Initially, he faced harassment from senior students who disliked his Chinese-style haircut. Giving in to their pressure, he trimmed his hair and resumed attending classes. However, the issue escalated when Assistant Professor Rahman, the college’s anti-ragging officer, found the haircut inappropriate. The professor reportedly took the student to a salon and forced him to completely shave his head.
The matter came to light when the student filed a complaint with the college principal. After a preliminary investigation, the principal removed Rahman from his anti-ragging duties. Despite attempts to keep the incident confidential, the news spread widely, drawing significant public attention and criticism.
Minister Demands Action
Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha expressed outrage over the incident and directed officials to take immediate action against those involved. In a teleconference held on Sunday, the minister ordered a detailed inquiry and urged steps to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
The minister emphasized the importance of awareness campaigns in all medical colleges to educate students about the consequences of ragging. He encouraged senior students to create a friendly and supportive environment for juniors while warning against any form of intimidation or harassment. The minister also suggested collaborating with the police to effectively address ragging cases.
Broader Implications
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of ragging in educational institutions and underscores the urgent need for strict enforcement of anti-ragging laws. Ensuring the safety and welfare of students is critical for maintaining a healthy and inclusive learning environment.
