Hyderabad: Telangana’s Minister of Information Technology, Electronics, Communications, and Industries, D Sridhar Babu, has called on the central government to set up semiconductor Advanced Packaging and Manufacturing Plants (APMP) and Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) units in Telangana. He made this request as part of the Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

While speaking at the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly-2024 (WTSA-24) in New Delhi, the minister highlighted Telangana’s strong infrastructure and the presence of global technology companies. He also mentioned the state’s growing startup ecosystem, making it a key player in India’s goal of becoming a $10 trillion economy.

During a round-table discussion with other state leaders, including chief ministers and IT ministers, Sridhar Babu emphasized Telangana’s position as a leading hub for semiconductor and AI development. The meeting was attended by Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister of State for Communications, and Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications.

The minister pointed out that as India moves towards having over 1 billion smartphone users, 10 million electric vehicles, and 2 billion Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the demand for semiconductors will rise significantly. Telangana, with its infrastructure and technology firms such as NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Broadcom, is ready to meet this demand.

Sridhar Babu also noted that Telangana has over 3.5 lakh skilled professionals in AI and semiconductor-related fields. He said the state is fully equipped to host APMP and ATMP units and contribute to India’s semiconductor goals.

The minister further explained Telangana’s vision to achieve a $1 trillion economy, which would help India reach its $10 trillion economy target. He urged the central government to take advantage of Telangana’s strengths in building a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem, which would help India maintain a leading position in global technology.

In addition to the semiconductor initiatives, Sridhar Babu highlighted the importance of completing the T-Fiber project. This project aims to provide high-speed internet to 8 million households in Telangana, improving connectivity for both rural and urban areas.

He asked the Centre for financial support for the T-Fiber initiative, which would offer affordable digital services at just Rs 300 per month. The minister explained that this initiative is not only about providing internet access but also about empowering rural entrepreneurs, enhancing education and healthcare, and improving the overall quality of life in the state.

The completion of T-Fiber, according to the minister, would further position Telangana as a leading destination for technology and semiconductor investments, contributing to India’s broader economic vision.
