Karimnagar: Old age can be a challenging and difficult phase of life. As people grow older, their physical strength and mental capabilities decrease, making it harder for them to cope with life’s challenges. It becomes even more difficult when they are left alone without anyone to care for them.

One student, Panduga Sahasra from ZPHS Ellanthakunta in Siricilla district, recognized this problem and decided to do something about it. With guidance from his teacher V Mahesh Chandra, Sahasra developed an aid called “Helping hands/Aid for the old aged”. This device helps elderly people lift themselves from the bed, sit, and stand on their own with the assistance of just one person. It also provides support for their daily activities.

The aid consists of a hydraulic attached stand that can lift the patient from the bed and change the bed. A rope and rail system is designed to be easily attached to the bed. This device can also be used by pregnant women, individuals with injuries or those who have undergone surgery, as well as children. By using this aid, they can easily wake up and sit on their bed without requiring much physical strength.

In another innovation, Usha Koyala Vaishnavi from Sircilla created a “Touchless Electric Switch”. Traditional electric switches can cause electric shocks, but with this touchless switch, simply waving a hand above it will turn it on, and waving again will turn it off. This eliminates the risk of electric shock accidents.

These two innovations show the creativity and problem-solving abilities of young students in addressing the challenges faced by the elderly and improving safety in electrical systems.
