Jule Niemeier, a German tennis player, won against three-time champion Petra Kvitova during the second round of the Madrid Open. This is the second Top 10 win of Niemeier’s career. Kvitova had been out of action due to a right foot injury and lost her fourth match in Madrid. Niemeier saved two set points in the first set, and won 7-6(9), 6-1 against Kvitova. Kvitova had won her 30th WTA Tour title in Miami and was competing in the 100th WTA 1000 tournament of her career.
Niemeier won five out of 17 matches this year, and this is the first time she has won back-to-back matches since October 2022. In the tiebreak, Kvitova came up with her biggest shots to save four set points, but Niemeier responded well, fending off two break points against her before taking advantage and converting her seventh opportunity. Niemeier won the first set and raced through the second while Kvitova made a total of 53 unforced errors to only 24 winners. Niemeier will go on to face either No.24 seed Belgian Elise Mertens or Rebecca Marino of Canada.
