Illegal Sand Trade Rampant in Mahabubnagar: Activists Demand Action

The illegal sand trade in Mahabubnagar continues unabated, with allegations that the sand mafia is operating with the support of corrupt local officials. Reports suggest that police, revenue, and mining officials are complicit in enabling the mafia to exploit government resources, resulting in significant financial losses to the state. Despite numerous complaints and directives from higher authorities, the illegal supply of sand at inflated prices persists, forcing locals to bear the brunt of the mafia’s activities.

Social activist Diddi Praveen Kumar has been vocal about the issue, accusing the administration of failing to take decisive action to curb the sand mafia. He pointed out that although senior officials, including the Mahabubnagar SP and District Collector, have issued repeated orders to regulate sand trade, enforcement by lower-level police and revenue officers has been temporary. After brief crackdowns, the illegal operations resume, perpetuating a cycle of corruption and exploitation.

Insiders claim the sand mafia has been able to thrive due to the involvement of corrupt officials in key departments. Instead of ensuring fair distribution, these officials allegedly allow the mafia to create artificial shortages, driving up prices and forcing residents and contractors to pay exorbitant rates for sand. Activists argue that a well-organized nexus between the sand mafia and corrupt officials is manipulating the system, making it nearly impossible for the public to access sand at reasonable prices.

Praveen Kumar has urged the government to take strict action and regulate the sand supply system effectively. He emphasized the need for government control over sand distribution, with close monitoring by police and revenue departments to prevent illegal activities. He warned that without sustained efforts, the sand mafia would continue exploiting loopholes, creating artificial scarcities, and overcharging the public. “Unless the sand distribution system is streamlined and monitored, corrupt officials will continue to support these illegal activities, and the public will suffer,” he said.

Although the government has taken some steps in response to complaints, activists argue these measures have been temporary and ineffective in eradicating the illegal trade. They are calling for long-term solutions, including strict enforcement of regulations, continuous surveillance of sand excavation and transportation, and severe penalties for corrupt officials aiding the mafia. Activists believe a controlled sand distribution system is essential to ensure fair pricing and to end black-market operations.

Without decisive action, activists fear the unchecked exploitation of government resources will persist, leading to further revenue losses for the state and financial hardship for residents. They are urging authorities to go beyond short-term crackdowns and establish a robust, corruption-free monitoring system to break the sand mafia’s grip on Mahabubnagar’s sand trade.
