In Wanaparthy district and nearby areas like Pebbair, Chinnambai, Veepanagandla, Pangala, Revalli, Gopalpeta, and Kothakota mandals, there is a growing illegal trade of ration rice. Those involved are buying rice at Rs 7 and selling it for Rs 70. Authorities seem to be ignoring this illegal activity, only conducting token raids and registering minor cases, while the illegal trade continues.
The negligence of authorities is allowing the illegal trade of ration rice to thrive. Despite efforts by the Central and State governments to distribute PDS rice for food security, the rice is being diverted for profit. The rice intended for the poor is now turning into a profitable business for illicit traders, generating black money.
Many beneficiaries are no longer consuming the government-provided rice, leading to a surplus in households. This surplus is then sold to buyers at Rs 5-7 per kilogram, making it a profitable venture for illegal traders. Locals allege that political leaders and officials are complicit in allowing many millers across the district to openly conduct this illegal business.
The recycled rice is being sold in the open market for Rs 60-75, despite its poor quality and lack of nutritional value. There are suspicions that authorities may be involved in this illegal trade themselves, as they seem to be failing to put a stop to it. Revenue and Civil Supplies officials are facing criticism for their negligence in addressing the issue.
When rice is seized, only minor cases involving small quantities are registered, such as 5-10 quintals. Locals believe that if given the freedom, the police could dismantle this mafia within 24 hours. However, political influence is hindering their efforts. In response to these concerns, the public is urging the government and higher authorities to step in and ensure that the rice meant for the poor reaches its intended recipients.
