The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has advised television channels to not give a platform to individuals who are charged with serious crimes like terrorism or belong to banned organizations. This advisory was issued after a recent discussion on a TV channel featuring a person from a foreign country who is facing criminal charges, including terrorism, and is associated with a banned organization in India. During the discussion, the person made comments that are harmful to the country’s sovereignty, security, friendly relations with other nations, and could disturb public order.
The Ministry has emphasized that while it respects media freedom and their rights under the Constitution, TV channels need to follow the provisions of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, including Section 20(2).
