Hyderabad: Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy announced that the Indian Air Force (IAF) has approved the development of Adilabad Airport for civil use. This is part of the Telangana government’s plan to expand air travel facilities in the state.
The Minister also mentioned that the IAF is interested in setting up a training center at the Adilabad location in the future. He congratulated the people of Adilabad and Telangana on this development. He highlighted that this is the second airport in the state to get IAF clearance within six months, the first being Mamunur airport in Warangal.
According to a letter from the Air Force dated December 18, 2024, IAF officials expressed their willingness to allow civil aviation services at Adilabad Airport. They also mentioned the possibility of establishing an Air Force training center in the future. The letter confirmed that the necessary permissions for civil operations are being granted.
The IAF has proposed that the airport be developed as a joint user facility, allowing both civil and military flights. To support this, infrastructure such as a new runway, civil terminal, and aircraft parking area (apron) will need to be built. The Air Force has also asked the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to arrange the required land.
Minister Venkat Reddy said that AAI has requested detailed proposals from the IAF to move forward. He added that the state government is working with officials to prepare a report with all required details, which will be submitted to the central government and other departments soon.
The Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for their support in approving both Mamunur and Adilabad airports. The IAF’s letter suggested that Adilabad Airport could be used jointly, with AAI acquiring nearby land to build the necessary facilities for civil aviation.
