Hyderabad’s Khairtabad DCC President, Dr. C. Rohin Reddy, has criticized the BRS Government for the flooding of low-lying areas in Hyderabad due to heavy rainfall. He expressed concern over the unpreparedness of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and highlighted the issues faced by Central Hyderabad (Khairtabad) such as waterlogging, flooding, traffic congestion, and clogged stormwater drains. Rohin Reddy blamed the authorities’ negligence for the severe damage to the local economy.

He gave an example of Indira Nagar Colony in Khairtabad, where rainwater entered houses due to the absence of stormwater drains. He emphasized that waterlogging has become a recurring problem in Hyderabad, and the city’s drainage system is not equipped to handle heavy downpours. As a result, many households, especially those from vulnerable sections of society, suffer as their homes and belongings are damaged by the rain.

Rohin Reddy also mentioned that no action has been taken to address the waterlogging problem on the Khairtabad-Punjagutta Road, causing significant traffic congestion. He highlighted the blockage of stormwater drains due to uncleared garbage as another major factor contributing to the chaos.

According to Rohin Reddy, the authorities’ lack of preparedness and failure to take proactive measures to tackle heavy rainfall indicate negligence. He criticized the BRS Government for not improving the drainage system and ensuring the smooth flow of stormwater. The delay in garbage disposal and drain maintenance worsens the situation.

The Congress leader emphasized that the consequences of these water-related problems extend beyond inconvenience for residents. The local economy suffers, with small businesses, street vendors, and shops in low-lying areas forced to shut down temporarily or experience reduced footfall. Transportation disruptions also affect daily wage earners who rely on consistent work opportunities.

Rohin Reddy remarked that while significant infrastructure improvements were made by the previous Congress Government, the BRS Government has failed to make any additions in the last nine years and neglected to maintain existing infrastructure. He demanded that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao and other ministers visit the affected areas, activate local authorities, and take measures to prevent further damage.
