Voters in Greater Hyderabad showed apathy during polling for the Hyderabad and Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituencies, with both districts recording the lowest turnout in Telangana. Hyderabad had 48.48% turnout, while Secunderabad had 49.04%. These numbers are provisional, and the final figures will be released later.
Despite efforts to encourage voter participation, urban voters remained disinterested during Monday’s polls. Even political parties and candidates had urged people to vote, but their appeals had little effect on urban voters, resulting in the lowest turnout in the state.
Final numbers revealed that Hyderabad had the lowest turnout at 48.48%, a slight increase from the 2019 elections. Secunderabad had the second lowest at 49.04%, also higher than in 2019.
The low turnout was surprising given the pleasant weather, with recent rains and clouds lowering the temperature. While some polling stations saw early queues, many were deserted throughout the day.
Local leaders blamed the low voter presence until 4 pm on the summer weather. However, turnout increased after 4 pm, with some areas polling until 6 pm.
Since the delimitation in 2009, voter turnout in Hyderabad has stayed between 44-54%. In Secunderabad, turnout has ranged from 46.50-54.93%. This year’s election saw 48.48% turnout in Hyderabad and 49.04% in Secunderabad.
Hyderabad had a total of 22,17,094 eligible voters, with only 10,74,827 casting their votes in 1,944 polling stations. Secunderabad had 21,20,401 voters, with 10,39,834 voting.
In Hyderabad, Malakpet had the lowest turnout at 42.76%, while Goshamahal had the highest at 54.72%. In Secunderabad, Jubilee Hills had the lowest turnout at 45.59%, while Secunderabad itself had the highest at 52.48%.
