The Telangana government has issued an order for all hotels, restaurants, and eateries in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits to provide purified drinking water to their customers free of charge. The Municipal Administration and Urban Development special chief secretary, Arvind Kumar, has directed all food establishments to supply purified water provided by the Metro Water Works departments or RO purified water at no cost. The directive also stipulates that packaged bottled water can only be sold at the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) printed on the bottles.
The GHMC commissioner has been instructed to take appropriate action in response to the order. The directive comes in response to a complaint from an NGO against hotels and restaurants selling packaged drinking water at exorbitant prices, causing inconvenience to the general public.
