    Hyderabad: Inconvenience After Rain

Following heavy rain, the residents of Hyderabad are facing numerous problems due to poor road maintenance. Many roads are full of potholes, damaged manholes, stagnant water, uncollected garbage, and incomplete roadworks. This has made commuting risky.

Driving in the city has become dangerous as the rain continues. The damaged roads have led to accidents in some cases. Potholes greet citizens as soon as they leave their homes. The ride becomes bumpy on the main roads too, forcing people to take detours to reach their destinations.

Areas like Kapra, Serilingampally, Nizampet, Uppal, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Kukatpally, Khairatabad, Ameerpet, Nampally, Tolichowki, Langar House, Filmnagar, and Shaikpet are especially affected. The damaged manholes in these areas pose additional risks to both pedestrians and motorists.

Ramesh Jain, a commuter in Madhapur, mentioned that the rain has eroded the asphalt and washed away the blacktop, creating large potholes everywhere. Both the new city and Old City areas suffer from damaged roads filled with potholes. Inadequate drainage systems worsen the situation by causing water pooling after rain, which breeds mosquitoes and increases the risk of diseases. The accumulation of garbage further adds to the unsanitary conditions.

Residents are demanding that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) address these issues. They pointed out that in areas where flyovers are under construction, roads have deteriorated further.

Many people have taken to social media to express their grievances. Images and videos of pothole-filled roads are being posted online. One commuter described driving in the city as a nightmare.

Activists also highlight that delays in restoring roads dug up for drainage and water pipelines are adding to the danger. After rain, these roads become accident-prone areas. Mohammed Ahmed, a local activist, emphasized the risk posed by dug-up roads.

On Monday, GHMC commissioner Amrapali Kata held a meeting with officials. She directed them to immediately fill potholes across the city to ease commuting troubles. She also instructed the sanitation wing to clear garbage to prevent further road damage.
