On January 17, 2025, Hyderabad showcased the importance of its modern infrastructure in a life-saving organ transportation mission. The heart and lungs of 34-year-old Malga Naveen, who was declared brain dead after a tragic accident, were successfully transported using the Hyderabad Metro and the Outer Ring Road (ORR). This effort played a crucial role in saving lives.

Naveen had collided with a tractor while riding his two-wheeler, suffering severe injuries. He was rushed to a private hospital but was declared brain dead later that evening despite the best efforts of the medical team. After his family made the compassionate decision to donate his organs, doctors at Kamineni Hospital in LB Nagar swiftly harvested five of them, including his kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, and corneas.

Three of Naveen’s organs were transplanted into patients who were already hospitalized. The heart and lungs, however, needed to be transported to other hospitals in the city. To ensure the organs reached their destinations quickly and safely, carefully planned green corridors were set up.

The heart was transported to Gleneagles Global Hospital in Lakdi-ka-Pul via the Hyderabad Metro, while the lungs were taken to Yashoda Hospitals in Hitech City using the ORR. The journey for the lungs, which started at 9:45 p.m. and ended at 10:24 p.m., took just 39 minutes. Both trips were executed seamlessly, thanks to meticulous planning.

This successful operation was made possible by the Jeevandan Cadaver Transplantation Programme, which oversees organ transplants across Telangana. The timely delivery of the organs through Hyderabad’s Metro and road networks gave critically ill patients a second chance at life, highlighting the city’s commitment to supporting organ donation and transplantation efforts.
