Water Contamination and Shortage Worries Hyderabad Residents

Residents in the southern and western parts of Hyderabad are facing serious issues with drinking water contamination and pipeline overflows. This ongoing problem has forced many families to rely on water tankers to meet their daily needs.

Locals claim that despite filing complaints with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), the situation remains unresolved. Damaged and poorly maintained pipelines are causing water to leak and overflow, resulting in significant wastage. As a result, some areas, including Tolichowki, Nizampet, Lalaguda, Manikonda, Chilkalguda, Kondapur, Bachupally, and Darulshifa, are only receiving water once every four days.

“For the past month, drinking water has been continuously overflowing from damaged pipelines, making the entire lane slippery,” said Sai Teja, a resident of Nizampet. He added that water supply in his area comes at very low pressure, leaving residents dependent on water tankers. “We can’t imagine how bad it will get during the summer,” he said.

B Srinivas, a resident of Kondapur, voiced similar frustrations. “We’ve been complaining about water wastage on the HMWSSB website for months, but nothing has changed. For the past two weeks, we’ve been receiving water at very low pressure,” he explained. Srinivas pointed out that the pipelines in his area are old and rusty, and they have never been repaired. “Now, we’re left with no choice but to rely on water tankers,” he added.

The residents are urging the authorities to take immediate action to repair the pipelines and prevent further water wastage, especially with the summer months approaching.
