Hyderabad’s cab drivers have started a protest against ride-hailing companies like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. They are refusing to take trips to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) until their demand for fair fares is met. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU), led by Shaik Salauddin, is organizing this boycott.

The drivers argue that the fares set by these companies are too low, making it difficult for them to earn a decent income. Despite asking the government and transport authorities multiple times to introduce fair pricing, no action has been taken.

Shaik Salauddin stated that the payments drivers receive do not reflect the hard work they put in. He explained that drivers work long hours but earn very little, leaving them with no choice but to protest.

The union’s goal is not just to protest but to push for changes in the fare system. They want ride-hailing companies to increase fares so that drivers can have a sustainable income. Along with the airport trip boycott, the union plans to inform passengers about the difficulties faced by gig workers and demand stricter regulations in the industry.

This protest highlights a larger issue about workers’ rights in the gig economy. Many gig workers do not get the same protections as traditional employees. The union is asking the government to step in and create rules that ensure fair wages for drivers.

Since many passengers depend on these services to reach the airport, the boycott could have a major impact. It remains to be seen whether ride-hailing companies will change their pricing policies, but for Hyderabad’s cab drivers, the fight for fair pay continues.
