Data from the India Meteorological Department shows that climate change and urbanization have contributed to the increasing flood risks in Hyderabad. The city experiences extreme rainfall events, leading to floods, due to climate change. However, there is a concerning trend of fewer rainy days and irregular rainfall distribution across the city.
The encroachment upon water bodies and neglect of drainage system maintenance worsen the flooding crisis. Rapid urbanization since the 1990s has disrupted air circulation patterns and the natural flow of winds, amplifying the challenges posed by changing weather patterns.
The lack of maintenance of drains by civic agencies has reduced their carrying capacity. Encroachments and deposition of non-biodegradable waste in these drains further contribute to the problem. Lack of coordination among different departments responsible for drainage and infrastructure exacerbates the issue.
To address these challenges, a comprehensive, multi-directional drainage system with slopes every 10 kilometers is necessary.
