Hotels, restaurants, and other eateries in Hyderabad are causing sewer system blockages by dumping kitchen waste into drains. This illegal activity is damaging the city’s drainage system, but authorities are not taking action to stop it.
Sewer systems near hotels and restaurants are overflowing due to the dumping of kitchen waste into drainage lines. Despite complaints from locals, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has not cleaned up the mess. Sewage water flows for over a kilometer around these eateries, making the roads slippery.
Overflowing drains are a common sight in areas with major eateries like Malakpet, Saidabad, Old City, Tolichowki, Santosh Nagar, and others. The same problem is seen at popular eateries in Himayat Nagar, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Film Nagar, Nagole, Dilsukhnagar, Yousuf Tekri, and Tolichowki.
Residents and commuters witness eateries dumping kitchen waste into drains, leading to blockages and sewage overflowing onto the road. When the HMWSSB cleans the drains, they find food waste and plastic dumped by hotels. This practice makes roads slippery and inconveniences commuters.
One resident in Tolichowki complained about the foul smell and inconvenience caused by overflowing drainage due to a hotel’s waste dumping. According to HMWSSB, the main cause of sewer blockages is food waste and plastic dumped into manholes. Eateries lack oil traps, allowing oil to coat underground pipes and reduce their capacity.
Authorities have found meat waste and bones wrapped in plastic covers dumped into manholes during inspections. This irresponsible behavior by eateries is causing harm to the city’s drainage system and inconveniencing residents and commuters.
