HMWSSB Achieves 50% Target in 90-Day Desilting Drive
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has achieved significant progress in its 90-day special desilting drive. Over the past 70 days, the board has successfully de-silted 3,600 kilometers of sewerage pipelines and cleared three lakh manholes, completing 50% of the targeted work.
HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy explained that the initiative, launched under the orders of Revanth Reddy, aims to make Hyderabad a “Sewage Overflow Free City.” The goal of the drive is to reduce daily sewerage-related complaints by 30%. So far, 1,602 kilometers of pipelines and 1.22 lakh manholes have been cleaned across 12,673 areas of the city.
Daily Efforts and Resources
To ensure the success of the initiative, each team is working to clean 100 to 200 meters of pipelines and 20 to 25 manholes daily. The same 220 air-tech machines, 146 silt removal vehicles, and sewerage staff routinely used for sewage management are being deployed for this special drive. In addition to addressing daily complaints, these teams are systematically desilting pipelines and manholes to prevent future issues.
Monitoring Through Advanced Dashboard
A special dashboard has been created to track the progress of the desilting drive in real time. Complaints related to sewage overflow, polluted water, and silt on roads are being logged using GPS technology and displayed on Google Maps. The system uses “bubbles” to indicate the number of complaints in each area, with the bubble size varying based on the volume of issues reported and resolved. This innovative approach allows for better monitoring and ensures accountability.
The desilting drive is expected to be completed within the remaining 20 days, with the HMWSSB continuing its efforts to improve the city’s sewerage infrastructure and minimize public inconvenience.
