Hyderabad: Special Drive to Prevent Sewage Overflow Underway

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is conducting a 90-day special drive to tackle sewage overflow issues in the city. As part of this initiative, Managing Director Ashok Reddy recently inspected areas in Mehdipatnam and Langar Houz.

During the inspection in Mehdipatnam, officials discovered that some hotels in the area had directly connected their sewage pipelines to the Water Board’s sewage network. This caused food waste and other materials to enter manholes, leading to overflows. In response, Ashok Reddy directed officials to issue notices to the hotel owners responsible for these illegal connections.

The MD stressed the importance of installing silt chambers in commercial and residential complexes, including hospitals, hotels, malls, and multi-storied buildings. These chambers help prevent waste from entering the sewer lines, ensuring smoother flow and reducing pressure on the system. He also urged all eligible consumers to construct silt chambers to support the city’s sewerage management efforts.

Later, officials inspected de-silting work in the Tolichowki area. Plans were discussed to connect existing sewage lines lacking proper outlets to the newly constructed Zone-3 sewerage network. This initiative aims to modernize the city’s sewerage infrastructure in key areas.

The Zone-3 sewer network project focuses on upgrading the sewerage system in core city areas north of the Musi River. The project involves laying a 129.32-kilometer-long pipeline across a 33.50 square kilometer area, covering four constituencies. With a budget of Rs. 297 crore, the project will benefit Jubilee Hills, Goshamahal, Nampally, and Karwan constituencies, including parts of the Old City.

A senior Water Board official emphasized that this modernization effort will significantly improve the sewerage system’s efficiency and capacity in these densely populated areas.
