Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Water Board has started a 90-day special drive to stop sewage overflow in the city. On Tuesday, managing director Ashok Reddy visited areas under Operation and Maintenance Division 10 and 11 to inspect the progress of the work.
During his visit, Ashok Reddy checked the de-silting, sewerage, and manhole repair works in LB Nagar and Nagole areas. He also visited Vastu Colony and the surroundings of Hotel Swagath Grand in LB Nagar, where sewage problems have been an issue for a long time. There are 15 colonies around these areas facing sewage issues. It was suggested that building a new outlet could solve the problem. As a quick solution, workers were ordered to start digging, remove the silt, and fix damaged manholes.
Officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) said that the GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) had built sewerage lines in Old Nagole village and connected them to rainwater drains. Now, the Water Board is managing the sewerage in that area. However, the GHMC has not cleared the rainwater harvesting pits, which causes sewage to overflow onto the streets whenever it rains.
In some places, manholes built by the GHMC were left without proper plastering inside, leading to silt building up. This could become a bigger problem over time. To prevent this, the Water Board has ordered that old manholes be identified and plastered inside. Additionally, the sewerage pipelines in these areas will be upgraded where needed.
Many commercial buildings, including hospitals and hostels, have been informed that they must build silt chambers to help manage the sewage better, according to a senior officer from the HMWSSB.
