In Hyderabad’s Old City, Munni Bai has been following a unique tradition for 25 years. She observes fasting during the holy month of Ramzan, just like her mother-in-law did. Her children and grandchildren support her in continuing this practice in their home in Raheempura, Mangalhat.
Munni Bai’s devotion is linked to a nearby Dargah, just a few meters from her house. The shrine, dedicated to Saint Hazrat Syed Kaleemullah Shah Quadri, has been under her family’s protection for decades. Her mother-in-law, who spent her life caring for the Dargah, observed fasting during Ramzan. She passed away 25 years ago on the first day of Ramzan while fasting. Since then, Munni Bai has taken on the responsibility of caring for the shrine and continuing the fasting tradition.
She also shared a deep spiritual connection with the shrine. Munni Bai, who belongs to the Lodha community, recalls that both she and her mother-in-law had visions of Saint Syed Kaleemullah. The shrine is located in one of the oldest graveyards and is mentioned in historical records under the name Syed Imam Ali Shah Saheb. Watching her mother-in-law’s devotion inspired her, and after her passing, Munni Bai also began having similar visions. Over time, as she dedicated herself to caring for the shrine, these visions became less frequent.
The family actively organizes events at the shrine, including Urs celebrations, with the participation of the local Muslim community. They have also funded improvements to the shrine, including building a proper structure. “In the past, we raised funds through chit funds to develop the shrine,” Munni Bai said. She now hopes that the Waqf Board will step in to improve basic amenities like bathrooms for visitors. “The authorities should finally sanction funds for this place,” she added.
